  • I’ve a problem…

…maybe you can help me with. My record player (phonograph) no longer auto-returns. There’s no visible damage, and it works just fine otherwise, except now, obviously, I have to manually turn it off after the record finishes. Which is really annoying. Any thoughts?

(and yes, some of you might suggest I just get myself an mp3 player, but I already have one. The hard-drive had to be replaced a few months ago, the battery life-span is down to about an hour, and the interface buttons are on the fritz. It’s a year and a half old, and the record player is maybe 30 years old.)

  • If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say maybe a belt or something broke.  I’d open her up and see if that’s the case, if possible.  I’ve never taken apart a record player though so don’t blame me if it explodes or something.

  • … I have no clue. Sorry! >_<

  • Try farting on it.  Works like a charm for me!

  • On the bottom of the tone arm shaft there should be a protruding area that touches a small limit switch that triggers the tiny electric motor that starts the return sequence when the arm has reached the center of the record. You would have to take it apart, usually from the bottom, and check if any of these parts have broken or wore out. 30 years old? Don’t know if any of those parts could be replaced. Do you know anyone that works on small electronics?

  • What is a phonograph?

  • LOL!  Record player…you are awesome!:)

ps.  I know you probably didn’t change it that recently, but love the new (welp maybe not so new) look of the page.  It’s got a very clean, easy to read, refreshing feel…love it!

  • HA! I know what you’re talking about. And for all those people who don’t…….I guess I’m old. Anyway, my thoughts are simply this…..”For a 30 yr old phonograph, and the only thing that doesnt work is your needle auto-return…Id say that’s pretty darn good!!” If you don’t want it anymore because its too much of a hassle now, I’ll gladly take it off your hands!

  • It’s the belt…like commenter #1 said…and as old skool as I am…i ain’t got one of those

DO have a closet full of NOW unplayable-cassettes though
